Telephone Poems

English class in elementary and middle school was fun when we got to play with poetry. One of the types of poems we learned about was the Telephone Poem... Here's 2 examples of a Telephone Poem.

Susie

5        The once was a girl
2         Named Susie
3         who fell down
~
1         and
3         Got a bruisie
8         She cried for her Mother, sister, and brother
7         They looked and said "That's a doozie!"

Pirates

3         Way Down yonder
5          In the land down under
4         There lived a pirate
~
4          That liked to plunder
5          He was doing just great
6          Finding treasure with all his mates
7          Until he made one to many blunders.

A Blotz Poem

"

These poems are nonsense poems that are just for fun. You make up a creature and them describe him with the same letter the creature's species starts with.

 "

Basically the formula is:

This is a <Creatures name>.
<Creature> live in <different places that start with same letter as creatures name>
<Creature> eat <different foods that start with the same letter as creatures name>
<Creature> likes <different things it might like that start with same letter as creatures name>
<Creature> are <describe how they are using words that start with the same letter as creatures name>
This <Creature> <describe stuff the creature might have done using words that start with same letter as creatures name>

Here's a Blotz poem I did back in 7th grade I think... We were doing poetry in English class. The teacher was teaching us different poem formats.

Babolkins

This is a Babolkin.
Babolkins live in beautiful, blue basket buildings.
Babolkins eat buns, butter, boiled beans and drink beer.
Babolkins like boys, bubbles, bubble gum, and books.
Babolkins are bilingual, always says "Bottoms up", and write blotz poems.
This Babolkin beat me black and blue, blew up my boots, and bit my baby brother.

Heart Songs!

A few years ago Oprah had a young poet on her show. Young Mattie was just 11 years old. He had a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy. Despite being in a Wheelchair and on Oxygen he lived life to the fullest. He had 3 wishes... 1) to have his poetry published so others could read it. 2) talk peace with Jimmy Carter, who was his hero. 3) to meet Oprah. Amazingly all three of his wishes were granted. Sadly Mattie died in 2004. He was a few weeks shy of his 14th birthday.

Here is his comment on "Heartsongs" that he told Oprah...

"A heartsong doesn't have to be a song in your heart. It doesn't have to be talking about love and peace. It can just be your message. It can be your feeling," he says. "Some people might even call it a conscience, even though that's not really what it is. It's your message, what you feel like you need to do."

Everyone has a heartsong, Mattie says. "No matter what it is, it still sings the same beautiful message of peace and love. People are fighting over how our heartsongs are different. But they don't need to be the same," Mattie says. "That's the beauty. We are a mosaic of gifts. Each of us has our inner beauty no matter how we look."

I guess after watching Oprah's show I wrote this poem...

I heard a song today.
It came in a small package,
but it rang out strong and steady.
Wizened beyond his years,
A little boy shares his "Heart Songs".
His songs full of wisdom and peace.
Full of his joys and fears.
Reaching out to others' hearts
Thus fulfilling one of his 3 wishes.
So for Mattie, I write this.
It takes just one voice to be heard!

Sisters 4...

I was going thru a folder of some of my writings and came across a little blue piece of paper with something I was playing around with a long time ago.... As you can tell I like playing with descriptive words...

Sisters 4

Sisters 4 are we, the seasons be
Living in Earthly Harmony.
Winter Sister waltzes with a Frosty Glow
Full of Glitter and Powdery snow.
Spring Sister steps into Flowery Elegance.
Full of love and her Merry Stance.
Summer Sister sashays with a Shimmery Gesture.
Full of Daystar warmth and Dreamy Allure.
Autumn Sister is aflame with Blazing Color.
Full of bountiful Harvests and Crispness of aire
Sisters 4 are we, the seasons be
Living in Earthly Harmony!

Found another version of this poem awhile ago...

Sisters Four

A circle forged, let not be broken
A destiny written, let not be forsaken
The Sisters four are we, the seasons be
Working together in Earthly Harmony.
Without the sister's harmony, earth is at a loss.
Sisters Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall!
Faeries the sisters be, one and all.

Sister of Winter waltzes with a Frosty Glow
Full of Glitter and Powdery snow.
Sister of Spring steps into Flowery Elegance.
Full of love and her Merry Stance.
Sister of Summer sashays with a Shimmery Gesture.
Full of Daystar warmth and Dreamy Allure.
Sister of Fall is aflame with Blazing Color.
Full of crispness and much, much more!

Think Pink Mantra

Back when I was using a different blogging site (one that has closed down) I followed one by "Damned Lil Chit". She was a young women with a husband and young kids. She was also battling cancer. I loved how she gave cute little code names for all her doctors. Last I saw her blog before it all shut down, she wasn't doing too good. Her cancer was trying to kick butt. I wonder how she and her family are doing...

Way back when, I wrote this little mantra for "Damned Lil Chit"..

Think Pink

I am Woman, hear me roar!
The sky may be blue.
And the grass is green,
But all I'm gonna do
Is Think PINK!

I am a Warrior, this is MY War!
The horns have been blasted
My flag is waving for all to see
My strategies have been cast.
My flag still waves that powerful shade of PINK!

Call me a Survivor, for that's
What I'm gonna be.
I'm gonna be a Survivor
I am a Warrior, this is MY War!
Wearing my glowing Armor of PINK!

And this Little Light of Mine
It ain't so Little now.
For I am She-ra, Pink Sword in hand
I fight to eradicate Cancer of every Kind!
Stay Strong & Think PINK!
